What Is An Orthopedic Surgeon?

Orthopedic surgeons are doctors that specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of issues with your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. These issues are referred to as musculoskeletal problems. Without these areas of the body working right, you will not have the support and stability to move correctly. Musculoskeletal pain is the number one reason people visit their doctor each year. This type of pain can be caused by everything, from aging to sports injuries. A doctor will be able to address your pain and create a plan for your recovery. An orthopedic surgeon has the expertise to perform surgery if you need it. Surgery is combined with medicine and physical rehab. The surgeon is focused on getting your injury treated and to full recovery.

I was so impressed with Dr. Stein and Lauren George. The care was excellent and I’m fully recovered from a severe Achilles injury and back on the court. I highly recommend them.

Dr. Stein is an excellent doctor. He had to rebuild my right foot because of breaks that hadn't healed correctly. He took his time to discuss the progress of the healing of my foot. I had a long recovery and in a boot for longer than he or I thought. However, I stayed the course and now am able to walk for a long period of time without being in pain. I highly recommend him.

I went to Dr. Stein after having an MRI on my knee. We reviewed to MRI together and he gave me a generic knee brace and said I could use it if I wanted to. When the I received the billing invoice a couple weeks later, the knee brace charge was for $949, and I was on the hook for $427 after insurance. I could not believe my eyes, a comparable knee brace at CVS is under $40. He did not give any sort of notice that there would be a charge for the brace, or I would not have accepted it. I haven't even needed to use it. What sort of insurance scam are they running here? I have since spoken with the billing department multiple times and they have not been helpful. Proceed with caution, and do not accept any medical equipment they give you, you will just be overcharged for it.

I visited Dr. Stein's office this week to order a new set of orthopedic inserts. Dr. Stein performed my foot surgery (flat foot/tendon transfer) in 2016 and I completed PT with his office in 2017. The visit made me think about my experience and how fortunate I was to have such a great surgical experience and outcome. Before surgery, I was not able to put pressure on my foot when I got out of bed in the morning. Now (and for several years) I walk over 30 miles a week with zero pain. I feel so much better and am so glad that I was referred to Dr. Stein. I also want to compliment my PT, Nate Castine. He was great. And last, when I visited the office this week (5 years later...), I was really pleased to see that I recognized many of the staff. Seems like a sign of a great work place too!Thank you!!!

Dr Stein and his staff provided top notch care of my damaged Achilles tendon. He provided ample information on causes and treatment options, was easy to talk to, and did not rush. We first tried non-surgical treatment before deciding surgery was needed for reconstruction of the tendon. At every step pre and post op, I got clear written instructions on what would happen and what I needed to do. The surgical staff were total professionals. My very experienced physical therapist said that the incision was perfect , and that the tendon was reattached with just the right amount of tension. During the months following surgery, I and my PT had clear directions from Dr Stein on appropriate movements and exercises for each phase of recovery, and he or his wonderful assistant Lauren were always available to answer questions and for regular checkups. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Stein, who was independently recommended to me by 2 friends.

I highly recommend Dr. Stein. I went to Dr. Stein to get a second opinion on an ankle injury that just wasn't healing. He realized my prior doctor had misdiagnosed my issue and gave me a non-surgical option to treat the injury as a first step. I was thrilled that his non-surgical treatment plan solved my pain and allowed me to get back to running and all around feeling normal again. I would go back to him in a heartbeat if I ever had an orthopedic need again.

This is the year anniversary of my ankle replacement surgery and I couldn't be happier. I was born with club feet, most severe on the left. I had extremely good orthopedic care as a child, but just after college in the summer of 1983, I broke my left ankle badly and ended up with a couple of screws in my ankle joint. Many years later after hiking, biking and skiing on that ankle, it was very stiff and sore. Dr. Stein was my 2nd opinion for the surgery and I'm very glad that I opted to have him do it. I did all of my recovery PT upstairs from his office which was fantastic. I have more mobility in my left ankle than I've had in years, and I look forward to continuing an active lifestyle thanks to Dr. Stein.

I saw Dr. Stein over the course of the last year for a midfoot fusion consultation, surgery, and follow ups. I really appreciate his straightforward, honest, clear, and utmost professional attitude with me through the whole process. He gave me an incredibly clear picture of the procedure and recovery I was going to endure, making me more than ready to tackle what was ahead. He has a wonderful bedside manner and truly compassionate when delivering information that often can be hard to hear. He has a great team of PAs and assistants that were always there for questions and concerns, even giving me direct email to ask questions at any time with very quick responses. I hope I won't need more procedures, but if I do, I will always come back to him and his team!

When Should I Make an Appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon?

If you are experiencing pain with any of the areas of the body mentioned above, you should visit your doctor. If you don’t have pain but find specific daily tasks hard, you may also want to make an appointment. For example, if you are can’t carry your groceries or walk for more than a few minutes.

These may be a sign that there is something untreated that needs attention. Lastly, if you feel swelling or bruising around an injury, you could have an infection and need treatment fast.

What Happens at the Consultation?

Dr. Stein will start the visit by asking you the following questions:

  • Are you in chronic pain in your major joints?
  • Are you no longer enjoying daily physical activities because of your injuries?

If the answer to both of those is yes, make an appointment to get checked out. The consultation is simple and easy. Dr. Stein will take a look at your injury from the outside. Also, the doctor will discuss your medical history, past injuries, and talk about what things you want to get back to free from pain.

DR. STEIN SENSED THE REAL CONDITIONS QUICKLY, TALKED DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IN A FRIENDLY AND VERY ACCURATE WAY, RESPONDED TO ALL MY VIEWS AND SUGGESTIONS BEAUTIFULLY, AND WAS A PLEASURE TO LEARN FROM. A VERY SUPERIOR DOCTOR IN ALL RESPECTS.
